Making photos on OneDrive better: From your biggest screen to your smallest photo frame

OneDrive aspires to be the one place where you store everything in your life, including all of your photos, and we’ve been working hard to make that experience even better. Today we have three updates to that will make it easier for you to enjoy your photos on Xbox One, on Windows Phone, and at

New photo views on OneDrive for Xbox One

We launched OneDrive for Xbox so you and your family could view and enjoy all of your photos and videos right from the biggest screen in your house, your TV. And beginning with the updates that are starting to rollout today, we’ve made it even easier to sit back and relive your memories.

First, you will no longer need an Xbox Live Gold Subscription to use OneDrive for Xbox. This change will hit consoles soon as part of the June Update.

Second, we’ve made it faster to get to the photos that you’re looking for. As soon as you say, “Xbox, Go to OneDrive” and launch the app, you’ll see your most recent photos.

Want to see your pictures from across all your folders – just like the “All Photos” view at – organized automatically by time and date? Just select “more” and a timeline of your photos will pop right up.

From here, you can quickly jump from month-to-month to find exactly what you’re looking for. And once you do, start a slide show and enjoy!

Windows Phone 8.1 update: Auto upload of high-res photos

The latest Nokia smartphones – like the Lumia 1520 – take awesome photos. With the new Windows Phone 8.1 update coming to more and more devices, these high-resolution photos are now automatically backed up to OneDrive and available to you on whatever other devices you use, wherever you go.

Photo Printing Comes to OneDrive with

We’re also excited to share that customers in the US can now print photos from directly to their local Walgreens. This is an easy way to get beautiful prints of the photos taken on your phone (thanks to automatic camera roll backup) or photos that someone else has shared with you.

To print your photos, just select the photos you want on, click Manage, and then choose Order Prints. You can specify the size and quantity and they’ll be ready for pickup from your local Walgreens in about an hour.

As a special promotion, Walgreens is offering a 25% discount on all orders from OneDrive.  Just use the coupon code ‘ONEDRIVE’ during checkout.* So give it a try now and then head on over to your local Walgreens – your photos will probably be waiting for you by the time you get there.

    This is all great stuff!

I’ve used OneDrive, previously SkyDrive for years and have used WP automatic upload feature since release, I used to have it upload low-res versions immediately and then sync the full-res to my computer manually, which they would then be synced to my OneDrive. I now just do the full-res when I have wifi, but before this update I still had to backup the super high-res to manually.

Now the super high-res will be backed up, which is great, but now I have a OneDrive filled with thousands of pictures, countless duplicates mixed if low- and high-res, and just some saved multiple places because of how “Saved pictures” and “mobile uploads” folders have evolved. I would love to see Microsoft’s PhotoDNA be utilize to help users identity duplicate photos and get rid of lower quality versions.

I’m fairly sure the 8.1 large file upload is JPEG only and not the raw DNG files supported by the Icon, 930, 1520 and 1020, but it’d be nice if the article clarified this point.

  3. Timo, June 3, 2014 at 12:00 pm says:

Now if we’d just get the option to back up photos to OneDrive automaticly using cell data it’d ne nice for us with unlimited data.

It’s been a while there hasnt been a major new feature ! :(
How about a better integration (storing received email attachments in OneDrive)
How about media playing capability with xbox music
How about improving the OneDrive apps (both w8.1 and wp8.1)
    Please !

      I support this full heartedly.

In my opinion, where OneDrive Photos is still lacking is in photo organisation capabilities.

*There is no ability to create albums/collections (virtual folders which can be used to group together photos from actual folders). This is a big limitation compared to your competitors.

    * There is no ability to tag photos

    * There is no ability to sort photos by location.

Regarding the OneDrive photo app (at least for Android which is the mobile device I use). Can I suggest you add an option to run auto-backup only when the device is plugged in, and/or an option to run on a schedule. I hate having auto-backup using my battery and I don’t like it running before I have a chance to delete rubbish photos.

I am in support. Integrate something like Nokia Storyteller for WP.

  6. Pieter Hartgerink, June 3, 2014 at 8:12 pm says:

Still, I will not move to OneDrive until you allow syncing “folders shared with me” to my computer and provide more storage space for competitive prices (see 1 TB price at Google Drive)

I would really love to see this as well.

The look and feel is quite good in OneDrive. But it is still not really useful for photos, well, for storing it is ok, but organizing your photos is still not possible which is a very big disadvantage. In OneDrive it is still not possible to create your own web-albums with photos as shortcuts/virtual storage. A photo should only be physically stored once and then it should be possible to share it and organize it into different web-albums.
Unfortunately, as long this is not possible, OneDrive is of no interest and less userfriendly than other similar cloud solutions.

$0.29 for a 4×6 print from Walgreen’s is silly expensive. While it’s a couple extra clicks, you can upload to Costco Photo from OneDrive and get the same 4×6 print for $0.13. Not a big deal for a couple of prints, but if printing pics from the family vacation that makes a big difference. I love the idea of printing directly, but won’t pay that big a premium to save a few clicks…

    Please, please, integrate Photosynth!

OneDrive does need some enhanced organization tools. I was very surprised that Tag (people and otherwise) were not searchable. I would hope that from all my devices I could search my OneDrive repository and it would fine tags and content.

Please add some folder privacy controls. Like the ability to disable previews on folders. Until there is finer grained and more complete controls, I’ll never be able to use OneDrive as a complete cloud storage solution. I’ll continue to need photo hosting elsewhere.

This isn’t a problem limtied to OneDrive, I believe all/most general purpose cloud storage providers have this issue, so if you’re looking for feature differentiation, this could be a win.

How about erasing the silly upload limit of 2 GB per file. Now we have 1TB ahead, this 2 GB has become too silly to take serious.
Microsoft, please remove that upload limit per file!

Is it possible for you guys to speak/write in English?
Myself, I’m no English native, but we have to be able to understand what others are saying…

  20. Limiting Everything, July 23, 2014 at 8:48 am says:

So, you want OneDrive to be the center of picture storage of users, and you limit it to 10.000 files?! I did 1500 pictures in one week travelling around Europe. I cannot store all my pics in the “1 terabyte” storage I’m paying for.

IT-MAKES-NO-SENSE. 1 TB with a limit of 10.000 files is NOT 1TB of storage.

Stop making stupid products just because of little details.
