OneDrive for Everything in Your Life

Today we are pleased to announce that SkyDrive will soon become OneDrive.

OneDrive Logo

Why OneDrive? We know that increasingly you will have many devices in your life, but you really want only one place for your most important stuff. One place for all of your photos and videos. One place for all of your documents. One place that is seamlessly connected across all the devices you use. You want OneDrive for everything in your life.

Of course, changing the name of a product as loved as SkyDrive wasn’t easy. We believe the new OneDrive name conveys the value we can deliver for you and best represents our vision for the future. We are excited about what is to come, and can’t wait to share more.

For current users of either SkyDrive or SkyDrive Pro, you’re all set. The service will continue to operate as you expect and all of your content will be available on OneDrive and OneDrive for Business respectively as the new name is rolled out across the portfolio.

Expect to be able to experience the new OneDrive soon, and if you want to be one of the first to hear about it, let us know at OneDrive.com.

While I like the idea of marketing it as ‘One drive for everything in your life’, Skydrive kinda rolls off the tongue a little easier…maybe that’s just me..

Will be seeing new features with this rebrand?
    500GB + storage plans for example? ;)

    • Yeah… I feel the same way.
500GB and Unlimited storage would be great to see.
I’d also like to see an FTP option, even if only for the business version.

      • Anonymous says:

We need more free storage space.

        • Richard Li says:

Indeed. Especially if we are going to have photos and videos. Otherwise, we might just as well keep using other cloud services for the photos and videos and onedrive for the Microsoft Office docs.

        • JayKay says:

Why should it be free??? Hard drives aren’t free…
          Do you work for free?

          • appleSUCKS says:

Exactly. Not to mention it cost to upkeep all these cloud storage spaces. we are talking trillions of spaces. Just think how much does it cost to operate such a massive storage felicity/device for millions of ppl around the world. However, i do agree they should offer a little more than 7GB for free(its ok, but not great). I would start ppl at, 15GB to 20GB for Free. This will gives ppl more intensive to use OneDrive and bring family and friends over too. Although i got 100GB for free for one year, since i have been with MS for 25 years. So that was very nice to see that today, when i opened my OneDrive. That was a GREAT service. LOVE MS for LIFE.

        • pzxiaohei says:

Thats right! I use skydrive only because the logo is beautiful. If only 8Gb Free, some day in the future, I will change to other companies products. There are many this kind of products in China give us much large space…..

        • Matthew says:

I totally agree … 7GB if far too little as ever growing storage has become cheaper by the year … I really wish they brought back the 25GB.

      • cedroid09 says:

Yeah, FTP facility would be a great idea. It might be available for OneDrive Pro users at a best guess.

      • Anonymous says:

Why do you need an FTP?
Native integration with Windows 8.1 & Phone, and Apps for Business?

        • Me says:

There’s that awful word again Windows 8.1 Yuk Awful

          • appleSUCKS says:

Are you kidding me???? Do you even know what Win8.1 does or can do, or you’re just talking out of your AS*???? Win8/8.1 is the BEST OS EVER MADE. Those who BooooHoooo and Whine like you, have NO FREAKING CLUE what Win8/8.1 is, nor what it offers. I am so sick and tired of ppl like you bashing something you don’t know NOTHING about. If you do, tell me how you can be on the DESKTOP screen for DAYS, WEEKS, MONTHS….. without seeing or using the Tile Screen(metro) once??????? go ahead tell me, i’m waiting.
Also, while you are at it, tell us all, why don’t you like it. or think is awful. FYI, Win8/8.1 is Win7 on Steroids, everything you can do on Win7, you can do it FASTER and WAY BETTER on Win8/8.1 just so you know. If you small brain is going to say,”””there is no start button””. Guess what, there is a feature on Win8/8.1 that blows the old Start away, but many dumb ppl don’t even know is there. So BEFORE you BoooHooo, go and LEARN IT 1st.

          • SK says:

Hey appleSUCKS, this is probably talking about you. http://www.theverge.com/2014/1/21/5307992/inside-the-mind-of-a-fanboy

I love Microsoft too, but you’re a pathetic fanboy.

        • Kexy Biscuit says:

An FTP connection is easier than an App for a normal Android Phone, and it provides more way to use OneDrive.ε٩(๑> ₃ <)۶з

        • That’s actually a pretty good point. It would be nice to connect to it from my servers or write programs to move files around. I’d also be able to use services like Plex with it. But for 95% of what I’d do… you’re right.

        • Kaan Turkes says:

If you use a non MS operating system like Linux or Unix, or wanna upload multiple files at faster rates FTP would be very good idea. Also many companies are blocking online storage sites but allowing FTP and SFTP.

          • Mitch says:

Exactly Kaan. Why is Micro$oft always re-inventing a perfectly good wheel. FTP can be accessed by almost any old or new computer via an internet access. Browsers can be blocked from working at my place of employment.

        • Thomas says:

Interoperability – there are devices and OSes that Microsoft haven’t developed a Skydrive program for.
Migration – an existing setup using FTP could be straightforwardly pointed to the new server.
Unification – consider being able to readily access multiple cloud storage providers from one FTP application.

And it’s an extra feature anyway. Features look good. Users may choose FTP support even if they DON’T really need it.

Now I’ll be honest, FTP isn’t secure and that’s probably reason enough for MS to not add it. But a standards-compliant secure protocol, such as SFTP, would do the job.

        • iMarvin says:

Because my goddamn printer scans via FTP

        • DB says:

Because some of us still use unix/linux/Mac and other platforms. While you maybe able to use an API or a plugin to connect to “OneDrive”, sometimes it is just nicer to use something you already have. Especialy when it comes to servers.

        • Abhi says:

Ever heard of world outside Windows?
Anyway, I too would love to see ftp but its way to insecure and does not make much business sense for Cloud storage providers. Skydrive is great I am ok if they don’t give anything new (for free) but maintain the existing ones. Still much better than Google’s drive.

        • Mario says:

Not all requirements are for personal use. Microsoft ought to think of this new service for Personal use but also for Small and Medium businesses.

FTP might be a bit out-of-date but SFTP (the secured child) is more likely to be used by businesses.

    • Ed Dersch says:

They had to change the name because of a trademark infringement lawsuit.

      • Adam Powers says:

Couldn’t they just buy that other company, keep the name and dissolve the corporations and sell off the assets like any other good corporate giant would do? I like the name SkyDrive.

        • John Artwood says:

The other guy is British Sky Broadcasting Group… I doubt MS would want to spent the money they’ll ask.

        • Mathieu says:

No because the company was… too big! It was the Sky broadcaster, which has nothing to do with cloud or even computing, but still won the trial.

          • Dave says:

because of stupid actions like this is why I try not to do any European business. Everything is about protectionism

          • RobM says:

Nothing to do with computing except for the bit where they’re quite a large ISP here in the UK and have been using “Sky[whatever]” as their branding for various services for far longer than Microsoft.

          • mat says:

“It was the Sky broadcaster, which has nothing to do with cloud or even computing”

They’re also one of the largest ISPs in the UK. I’m no fan of Murdoch, but it seems completely reasonable that consumers would be confused by the SkyDrive name.

          • Tony Proctor says:

Sky do actually offer a broadband service for their customers who want it. I would guess that their ‘On Demand’ film service might become associated with a cloud-based storage system one day… just guessing!

          • Mike says:

It never went to Trail MS agreed to change the name before it even got to that stage.

          • Mark says:

They do have a lot to do with computing, Sky is one of the biggest broadband providers in the UK alongside its broadcasting.

          • Ryan Newson says:

Is fox going to patent the sky so that anyone who comes close to it has to pay a fee?

        • Eric Pellegrini says:

The other company was British Sky Broadcasting, or B Sky B. It is owned by Rupert Murdoch. I don’t think buying it was a feasible option. Although I would be in favor of it’s dissolution.

        • Kai says:

BskyB controls almost all of the Television in the UK and they are super rich.

          • Eric says:

not to mention the weak dollar; would be paying almost 50% more than its worth.

          • Bob Daniel says:

We do have the BBC, thank goodness!

          • stephend says:

Not quite ALL of the TV in the UK; there is that little outfit called the BBC.

          • abc says:

If I am English I wouldn’t be too happy to have a media group as large as the BBC being owned by the State and controlled by persons of a particular party as the labor.
But this is a problem for you, I already have too much problem here in my small country.

          • J Wonders says:

            ala PBS

          • Anonymous says:

BBC isnt controlled by any party. Its independent from the government. Its funded by part of the TV License required by law to watch TV in the UK (other parts of the license go to other broadcasters too). Theres an independent board of trustees who are meant to make sure the BBC doesnt step too much on commercial channels’ toes given that the BBC doesnt have to bother competing for ad revenue (BBC has no ads).

          • Roc says:

In reply to abc and all users above:
At least you guys have some media to watch the world news. Here in China the stupid Gov and the Communi blah blah Party stand in almost every way to keep its own people from the outside world.
If you guys invade China again at this era, trust me, I do not blame you. I sincerely want these pigs to die.

        • Ant says:

          I prefer OneDrive

        • Chris W says:

For the sake of keeping the name of a cloud storage service? Are you mental?

        • Me says:

At this rate we’ll end up with one company on the entire planet that does everything. it might be called “Inc Incorporated” or in the UK “Inc Ltd”

      • Beercash says:

The next lawsuit will be with Canonical. Their cloud is called Ubuntu One. I guess it was not a lucky strike. They should call it SkyNet to make the vision come true from Terminator.

      • Rain says:

One Drive is suggestive… who uses only one (if were talking cloud Storage)…

Beside Drop Box beats it anyway… Most users of “onedrive” wont notice anyway, cus they be useing a microsoft Product that has this Integrated i suspect.

      • That’s gross! (To je hnus!)

    • Scott Cawley says:

Yes, Unlimited storage for the consumer would be great and I would be willing to pay for it. As of today, I use Carbonite for catastrophic loss for just shy of $50/year, heck even $100 given the integration with everything and access from anywhere. This covers photos, documents, music, video–whatever I choose basically. I am happy to reinstall the OS as I would expect. With unlimited, I could truly have “access from anywhere”..PC, Windows Phone, iPhone, Droid, ChromeBook, etc.

    • Amir Raouf says:

      That would be great
      Lets wait and see
Im using my SkyDrive a lot and want to have more storage and better access options like ftp, lftp or sftp ..

      • Åke says:

Moving or copying files directly to another Sky… I mean OneDrive account, without having to download and reupload them, would also be useful. Especially on metered connections.

        • mazman says:

Yes, uploading email attachments without having to download them would be useful; (and is a feature already available with gmail).

    • Morten Nissen says:

We’ll see how long they will have this name. There is a rather big webhosting service i the Nordic countrys that are called one.com and they also have a cloud drive service called Cloud Drive and with the name beeing One they MS will proberly get in trouble again. I wounder how much inverstigation they have done Before naming it to OneDrive. Maybe it’s a AD Consultant that came up with that name and they didn’t check it good enough. We’ll see what happens and how much that will cost MS.

    • Åke says:

I think it’s good; as a skydiver I will no longer misspell it “SkyDive” every time I type it.

    • alex mccarthy says:

it will be a good idea to have 250GB on free mode and a payment option

    • Jack Meihoff says:

I believe Microsoft would have never changed the name if it wasn’t for the fact they where ordered to stop using the name SkyDrive by a UK court. Somehow the name SkyDrive infringed on Sky Broadcasting Groups trademark.

    • David says:

It’s only because we are used to the name. In 10 or 20 years from now, they’re going to say, “Wow! Onedrive was called Skydrive? How weird”.

    • Joshua Allen says:

      Halo Drive or Halodrive

    • Michael says:

I have made a Budget Excel Spreadsheet that contains VBA macros. SkyDrive Web App does not like Macros and provides the following message:

“The following features will be removed from the workbook when you edit it in the browser:

      • VBA Project

If you don’t want to keep changes, you can use Previous Versions to restore an earlier version of the workbook.
To edit the workbook with all features, click Cancel and open it in Excel.”

Will OneDrive be any better and accept the fact that there are programmers out there who are able to make custom functions?

      • Materese says:

I agree!!!! I used macros to create awesomeness in my Excel workbook, and as soon as I sent them to the onedrive, they were gone!!! How to fix that????

    • FooFoo says:

Considering MEGA provides 50GB of free storage, has a backup client, and has apps across several platforms now…

but skydrive has 5GB free storage and limited platform support… I am not impressed yet.

    • Sean Weisman says:

Honestly, I hate that marketing statement. It’s pretty much saying that everything in our lives is digital. Yeah, let me just upload my family and friends to my OneDrive.

  2. Michael says:

Thanks Ryan. I just do not get it. How did British Sky Broadcasting Group take ownership of the word “sky”? It is a word in a English!

  3. Kris says:

Is this affect any kind of paid service that I bought earlier.

    for example.

    1. Skydrive in Windows phone and my 30 GB storage ?. I thing all thing will remain same. Right ?

  4. ep says:

When can users of the Windows 8.1 app expect to see a return of the shared files tab?

  5. JR says:

Wondering when music storage is going to be featured. When will OneDrive get integration with Xbox Music so that previously ripped music that isn’t available on the Xbox Music Store gets stored in the cloud with the rest of the Cloud Collection? I’ve got lots of ripped CD’s that just aren’t available on Xbox Music (some are on the iTunes Store, but many aren’t available on any online music store). Other online music stores already offer the ability to automatically upload and store unmatched music files online, and this was announced for Xbox Music/SkyDrive back when Windows 8(.0) launched but still isn’t available.

  6. Kenice says:

Love SkyDrive and the OneDrive name will take some getting used to, but it kinda goes with OneNote.

    • Anthony says:

I feel like they should’ve gone a little further with the new One branding and named the Office Web Apps: “OneWord” “OnePowerPoint” “OneNote” “OneExcel”. Type in any of those URLs and you go straight to creating a nee document for that web app in your OneDrive.

  7. Ben says:

But SkyDrive was such a better name. It’s “Cloud” storage, it’s in the Sky! It was perfect. #DontFixWhatIsntBroken

  8. Kwesi Asante says:

I have to say; when I heard MS was going to change the Skydrive name I was convinced that there wasn’t another name good enough to replace it; I was wrong. Perfect name. Well done!

  9. shsbgssj says:

    stupid name

  10. Tim Acheson says:

    That’s a good name!

That was on a list of name suggestions I emailed to Steve Ballmer, and I’m sure I’m not the only one to suggest it, it’s an obvious choice — especially with the buzz around Xbox One and the cloud integration on that device. I fail to see how SkyDrive infringed BSkyB’s trademark, but I guess it’s just the unfortunate nature of trademark judgements.

“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet”

  11. Love the name change!

I’m a big user of SkyDrive so looking forward to seeing what changes are coming :-)

    Russell

  12. Rick Robbins says:

I like the same, I am just so disheartened that I could carry over my 25GB SkyDrive to my Outlook.com account. I am forced to use MANY Drives because the only drive that would make sense as a OneDrive is Box.com and I am not a huge fan. I really love my SkyDrive and hope that you will do another 25GB or 50GB upgrade promotion and make EVERYONE happy.

  13. Great idea,
I have been using Skydrive for a very long time.
Its time for changes and improvements.
    One Drive :)

  14. Hans Brender says:

OneDrive is a short Name. OneDrive for Business is a Long Name. What’s the short term for that? OdB? ODFB?

    • Felininho says:

      One for Biz.

    • Paul T says:

OneDrive for Business is a horrible name. I will never be able to get my employees to say that with any level of clarity. They will end up saying “OneDrive” for short, and it will lead to a lot of confusion about where they put their files, and how they tell others where they put their files.

This is especially since O365 accounts can also be set up as Microsoft Accounts.

      • carol@smalldomain.ch says:

Skydrive is independent of SharePoint. SkydrivePro is SharePoint workspace.
They are two different things and need two different names.

  15. Kevin says:

This would be a great time to up the free storage to send a message to Google…..please.

  16. Monique says:

Will OneDrive allow you to configure to transload automatically to your photo sharing sites like PhotoBucket (I should be able to sell my stuff) or video feeds like Youtube. It would be great to attach all devices to OneDrive so that you have all your data in one place and on the cloud. It would be much better if you can copy those files easily to your different social sharing , .etc sites. A premium on the more externals you need to copy the files to automatically. That type of overall management couldn’t be beat. You’ll never lose your files. If something happens at one of the social sites you can reload quickly. family can go direct to your OneDrive for private viewing that doesn’t go to social accounts, etc.

  17. JD Figura says:

Changing the name for the sake of changing the name is silly. No one is going to look at SkyDrive differently and think “Oh, this is the ONE for me”. It’s all about value Microsoft. Not name changes. When will you guys learn that?

    • Asbjørn says:

They aren’t changing the name because they want to, but because Sky Broadcasting in the UK thinks it owns the word “sky” and sued Microsoft over SkyDrive. Microsoft chose not to fight them all the way and thus has to change the name.

    • 72 says:

To be fair, this change wasn’t “for the sake of changing”, there was a legal dispute behind this. Also, they just officially announced the name change, don’t jump to conclusions just yet, obviously there’s going to be a different offer of value to go with this change.

  18. Angelo says:

Great name! I suggested OneDrive as the new name to Skydrive Twitter’s account last year as it makes perfect sense. The “One” part also ties in with OneNote and Xbox One. Unifies services and products. OneDrive is a much better name than SkyDrive (for Microsoft) so I think we should be grateful that the name had to be changed. What next to unify Microsoft’s branding? Can’t wait!!!

  19. Asbjørn says:

It’s a pity that you caved in to Sky’s stupid claims. Sky shouldn’t be able to claim any name with the word Sky in it – it is a common English word. And if the have a problem with other people using an ordinary word in their product names, they should have chosen a better name for their company! Seriously, are people so stupid that they can’t see that the Sky logo is nowhere to be found on SkyDrive?
That being said, OneDrive isn’t a bad name at all. It dosn’t quite have the ring of SkyDrive, but maybe that’s just because I’m so used to SkyDrive.
Anyway, glad to see that you have finally settled on a new name and can move forward again. I’m looking forward to seeing OneDrive :)

    • Andrew McNaughton says:

It’s not because of the use of the work Sky… it’s because Sky already trademarked something they were calling SkyDrive in the past. So it’s the word SkyDrive… which isn’t common English. Sky bet Microsoft to using the term. So it is legally its term. Microsoft should have been smarter in the first place and ensured no one used it before.

      • Christian H. says:

Do you have any source for this? It’s the first time I have heard that BSkyB trademarked “SkyDrive”. To the best of my knowledge, they trademarked “Sky” and their customers have confused this and actually called Sky Support when they had problems with their SkyDrive, assuming it is a service provided by Sky. I can see how “a moron in a hurry” might get confused, and that’s what matters in English law: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_moron_in_a_hurry Also I think Microsoft didn’t want to fight with Rupert Murdoch and rather saw this as a chance for a fresh start and some free publicity for their cloud service. Now if only they could be forced to change the name of Internet Explorer. Any name will be better. Maybe “One Browser”?

    • Chris W says:

The Sky logo is the word ‘Sky’ (albeit stylised, which means nothing when it’s simply written) which is right there in the name ‘SkyDrive’. Sky provide various online services all with the ‘Sky’ prefix (e.g. Sky Go, Sky Broadband, Sky Talk) so it’s really not hard to see how confusion could occur.

Just because it’s a common English word doesn’t mean they’re not entitled to trademark it.

  20. Joep says:

Won’t this name change cause confussion when you compare it to ubuntu one. Which is also a cloud based drive? or one.com another cloud drive service?

  21. Collin says:

Are you going to make this version work on computers that don’t sign directly into a windows live id? I know people that are leaving SkyDrive since they can’t access it from their Windows Explorer since they have a computer on their domain, their company’s domain or whatever.

  22. Hi ,
I hope the change is done automatically through the update for OneDrive on my MacBook Pro Retina Display.

    Epifanio

  23. Tim Kimberl says:

What song is that playing in the video? Shazam has no ideas

  24. Juan Jose says:

I like the new name, it’s more in line with the rest of Microsoft brands (specially Xbox One) than “Sky” was.

Looking forward to the teased new functionality.

  25. JohnCz says:

I can deal with the name change and look forward to what you have planned to integrate Windows further. It is a shame though that brand awareness has to start from scratch…many years to get to this point. Hope Sky reimbursed you for all the markets they are not in.

  26. John says:

Please please please make Shared with Me folders available offiline.

  27. Mike says:

I have used Skydrive since beta days. I got the 20 GB bonus. When Outlook.com was created, I got a new email address and changed it on Skydrive. I lost my 20 GB bonus and to this day, have been unable to get it back. Big companies have little support for the regular user. I am a Big user of Windows 8.1 yet this has left me with a bad taste.

  28. Jyotheeswar Reddy says:

I like the name “One Drive”. I have been using Skydrive for along time and all my phone pics synched to Skydrive seamlessly.
Looking forward to new features on OneDrive.

  29. osm says:

I thought it would be difficult to replace the excellent SkyDrive name. But OneDrive is excellent too. Fits perfectly with a “One place for all your stuff” type marketing message.

However, please sort out photo organisation options. They’re terrible. Lacking tagging and album features at the moment. I’ll move my photos from Google Photos if you do this.

Also, please add support for version history for all file types. Not just microsoft office documents. I’ll move my general files from Dropbox if you do this.

  30. Jean-Francois says:

Great name, one day we won’t talk anymore about the cloud as it will be such common in our lifes. OneDrive is much more meaningful for the regular consumer!

  31. One Drive to rule them all !

  32. gantirajeshchandra@hotmail.com says:

The name, trailer… looks awesome. Waiting forward to look out for this service.

Just one thing.. as always with Microsoft, on the onedrive preview page, the devices shows a Samsung phone, Mac Book, Surface and then some windows tablet in background. As always the focus is on other ecosystems than Microsoft. Hope Microsoft gives their own brands a little more importance.

  33. What you really need is a decent slogan. Here it is:

“The sky’s no longer the limit…OneDrive.”

  34. Cajiln says:

    我给颠覆了

  35. Mike Knight says:

What about Windows 8.1 users? Will Skydrive be updated to OneDrive via a Windows update or a download?

  36. HPG says:

Glad you’ve got the name sorted out. Now, how about getting it to work with Windows 8.1? It’s incredibly frustrating not to be able to sync files with the desktop (i.e., have them available for use off-line). Just take a look at the forums in answers.microsoft.com to see how many users are being driven nuts by the problem.

    • Steve Taylor says:

You still can have your files on your desktop or laptop locally: Just open This PC on the desktop, look for SkyDrive on the navigation bar on the left, right-click the top-level folder “SkyDrive” and select “make available offline”. Now all of your files should be on your local machine, after the sync is done (meaning all lower folders after the words “SkyDrive” should have a circle with a check mark inside of it; none should have the white circle with two chasing arrows).

    • James says:

You can sync files to the desktop in 8.1…if you set it up so that your desktop folder is stored on SkyDrive. Please do more research before complaining that something does not work.

      • Derek says:

Look at the threads in answers.microsoft, com, for example http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/skydrive/forum/sdfiles-sdsync/skydrive-not-syncing-in-windows-81/ada8a18b-33d4-4924-b5ef-d43a15a0f4d1, before saying there’s no problem.

I wasted about 5 hours yesterday having Skydrive on Win 8.1 duplicate every one of 22,000 files, then decide it couldn’t sync anything and repeatedly complaining it couldn’t download or open files on my Skydrive. I think I’ve finally fixed it by deleting the account from the PC and recreating it, but there is definitely a severe problem in Skydrive which Microsft don’t seem to have a clean fix for.

It’s not clear, but the problem seems to relate to users who’ve used Skydrive for years and then upgrade to Windows 8.1. It somehow screws up the permissions on the local copies. But since Microsoft are silent about there being a problem, who knows what’s really wrong.

End result: lots of people have lost confidence in Skydrive/Onedrive as a solution.

      • Derek says:

You should do some research. If you look and http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/skydrive/forum/sdfiles-sdsync/skydrive-not-syncing-in-windows-81/ada8a18b-33d4-4924-b5ef-d43a15a0f4d1 for example, lots of people are having problems.

Skydrive seems to break if you are using it already on Windows 8 and upgrade to 8.1. The exact cause isn’t clear as Microsoft is silent about this problem, but it’s affected thousands of users, including me and I’ve been using Skydrive for years.

End result: lots of people have lost confidence is Skydrive/Onedrive and are looking at other solutions.

        • HPG says:

Exactly. The levels of frustration are getting very high in the forums, exacerbated by Microsoft’s lack of response. It’s quite bizarre: SkyDrive/OneDrive is clearly very important strategically to Microsoft. Why aren’t they taking this issue seriously? Perhaps they are internally, but they don’t seem able to acknowledge it publicly. The users who are most affected are the ones who are paying for their SD/OD storage; they’re more than a little annoyed.

  43. Why is the icon still a cloud? Shouldn’t it be closer to Ubuntu One’s icon now? The two clouds look like every other “cloud-service” doing just about anything. It needs some personality.

    • Laura says:

I agree. The cloud icon does not look as appealing with the new name OneDrive, since people tend to associate ‘clouds’ being in the sky. I think the logo should be rebranded to appeal more to ordinary consumers, who probably aren’t that familiar with the concept of cloud computing.

  44. Kenster says:

Is the individual file size limit still at 2GB? I heard a while ago that there were some discussions about a possible increase in size limit? Has anything changed? If not, perhaps they will consider increasing this limit along with the new OneDrive branding.

  48. Paul T says:

If Microsoft goes through the trouble of renaming to OneDrive, can you also give Skydrive Pro an entirely different name (different than OneDrive)?

The similar branding causes a lot of headaches from the IT side, as employees are constantly confused whether they put something on SkyDrive or SkyDrive Pro. It is a total mess when communicating and training.

    • Steve O'Neill says:

@ Paul T and others with the same concern.
Agreed, having SkyDrive and SkyDrive Pro is very confusing, especially when you sign into SkyDrive Pro and is says, “SkyDrive”, NOT SkyDrive Pro.
Try explaining this to 100+ employees. Now is the time for Microsoft to correct this obvious error.
The name is arbitrary. What’s important is how to differentiate between the Personal version and the Business version. NOT calling is the same name, might be a good start.

  49. John Lewis says:

I’m glad I’m not a Microsoft stockholder. Just another example of poor branding and marketing. Rebranding the Surface touch table and now Skydrive. The value returned versus the cost cannot possibly make sense.

sued Microsoft for using the name “Sky”.

  52. Younes GH says:

    • James says:

SkyDrive on Windows 8.1 is integrated. If you are experiencing issues with SkyDrive on 8.1 due to the actual SkyDrive application (not the app), it is because you left it installed when you went from 7 or 8 to 8.1 – which does cause issues. Your best bet is a clean install of Windows 7/8 and then a clean upgrade to 8.1; thus giving you the integrated SkyDrive.

      • HPG says:

… which is a pain to do, because it means reinstalling everything else, too. How confident are you that it’ll work? I ask because there have been many other solutions to the problem that have been posted, some of which seem to work for some users, but none of which work for everyone.

  57. Jacob says:

Can’t wait until the modern onedrive version can pull files from a remote machine!

    • James says:

It can pull files from a remote machine. If you configure your SkyDrive settings to allow remote access to the machine upon initial setup, your computer will show up in your SkyDrive web interface and you’ll be able to access it using a code.

      • Ed says:

  77. Kurt says:

I starting to believe that Microsoft is in fact trying to frustrate, confuse and annoy its customers. They have been making it a habit recently to rename/change and/or just plain abandon things. I admit, I have respect for a company that can change direction. That said, the respect comes not from the changes, but from focus. Microsoft, for lack of a better term, has been schizophrenic. I think it started back with Windows media becoming Zune which occurred around the same time as windows LIVE (which I personally, liked). So, for a brief time, I really though Microsoft was going to rally around the LIVE.COM, e.g. maps.live.com. search.live.com. music.live.com, etc. nice short name, easy to remember and I thought made for a great concept. Now, we have what?
    - live search -> bing search
    - media player -> zune
    Hotmail.com -> Live.com -> outlook.com (??)
    - Zune -> xbox music / xbox video
    -skydrive – > onedrive
-msn.com -> not really sure what this is, but seems to be one main landing page. It has the advantage of being the one consistent thing they have done in the last 10 years.

For me, this change just further erodes my confidence in Microsoft as it represents a change that furthers nothing. It’s still isolated from the rest the Microsoft services, it’s just a name change, and I see no benefit as the SkyDrive name is currently known and seems to be understood and respected.
NOTE: Time frame, sequence are not accurate, just my impression of the sequence of things.

  81. Joe says:

I do like the name Skydrive compare to Onedrive. I suppose they had a strong reason to change the brand name itself.

  82. AussieLes says:

    Dear OneDrive staff,
Hopefully there will be increased functionality compared to the most recent releases of Skydrive. Our business (and from web searches many, many others) has been significantly affected by the removal of the ability to easily share a Skydrive folder with non-Microsoft users. We are continually frustrated and need to spend time helping other companies access specific folders we want to share with them. Please see http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/skydrive/forum/sdfiles-sdsharing/shared-user-login-without-ms-account-or-needing-to/2f790e47-39c4-4258-8ec9-988ad79f4f8e?tm=1390870076291.

Of even more importance (and more commentary on the web) is the need to share one set of Skydrive folders and files with more than one Microsoft Account. This used to be possible prior to the Skydrive changes brought in Windows 8.1.

We have a legitimate need to share one set of folders/files and have them synced to a few user’s individual machines. This really badly affected us when we upgraded to Windows 8.1.

Although we could easily go to Google Drive and very simply accomplish what we need, I am really hoping you at the OneDrive / Skydrive team in Microsoft will see this and restore an easy method to accomplish these two features. (Share with non-MS account; share same set folders/files with local sync amongst a few users.)

    • carol@smalldomain.ch says:

      Good points!

      • AJ says:

Not being able to share externally without having a Microsoft Account is the number one problem with Microsoft SkyDrive Pro. If Microsoft wants to compete with Google this must be fixed. It makes no sense that the consumer version of Skydrive allows you to do this but the business version (Pro) requires that the external user have some kind of Microsoft Account.

  83. Mahyar says:

Something I’d like OneDrive to have?
    Versioning.

The bitlocker virus family have me slightly freaked, and currently they will encrypt all hot linked drives, which includes SkyDrive.

Adding verisoning, even 7 days versioning, will allow a hot-linked encrypted drive to be restored (by taking versions before the virus started encrypting).

  114. AndyB says:

Agreed that it’s a shame you had to change, but OneDrive is a lot better than Bing (I still struggle to say “Why don’t you Bing that?”….

Now, on my knees, any chance we will see the ability to access other people’s shared folders in the Windows Explorer app? 121. JR says:

    Why have Sky/OneDrive at all?

I never really understood SkyDrive Pro at all either. You already have a better storage system: SharePoint document libraries.

I would’ve rather seen this: SkyDrive scrapped altogether, and SharePoint brought down-level to the consumer level. SharePoint is awesome, and the new social networking features would make it a valid Facebook competitor. Plus, you already have file storage integrated with document libraries, and the key to the document libraries is present in the name – *Share*Point* – making it about social document collaboration, which is something people overlook in SkyDrive. It would’ve made a whole lot of sense to bring this to the consumer level rather than have to manage a radically different second service, especially since SharePoint already includes Office Web App integration.

Because, it saves all your computers settings like wallpapers, themes internet explorer settings and all other OS related settings in the Skydrive, so when you want to re-install the OS, you will be able to sync the same settings, themes etc again without reconfiguring the OS. And you would also like to know the usage of the OneNote which I usually use for saving all my important notes links of the websites, screenshots etc. You can find all the OneNote’s created in MS Office or Website (OneNote Web) in SkyDrive. You can also sync the selected folders of your Computer or the Mobile Phone in the SkyDrive. Microsoft provides free storage of 7 GB which is good enough to save all the images and documents. However, you need to upgrade the storage in case if you want to save videos that have large size… Try using Skydrive completely, so that you would really enjoy using it.

For sure, more free storage. 7GB is absolutely not enough and under the concurrence. I would offer, minimum 50GB or unlimited! In this case, I would change from Gmail to Outlook as a primary email.

  139. Amol says:

Hmm. Google drive is totally bad, and useless. Talking about lawsuits, Microsoft can win a law suit against Google by a 100% chance. That is because, Google is doing a copyright infringement buy getting profit from or using a web apps called “Google Docs”, which is a copy of office web apps with a different name and different background style. Which Google did just to hide their crime. They did this without asking Microsoft for permission, which Microsoft would never give. Also, if the court orders Google to stop Google Docs, it would mean bye, bye to Google, or Microsoft would do a unfriendly (court ordered) takeover of Google. It’s only till the time Microsoft finds out about this that Google will still exist after which there will be no more Google.

If anyone from Microsoft reads this blog then a couple of suggestions:

    1) At least 1TB of storage space is now the norm paid or otherwise
    2) If paid, give the option for longer contracts with a discount say 2, 3 or 5 years etc
    3) The Sky(One) Drive app, is it possible to include scheduled uploads as well as continuous? When running continuously it uses a lot of system resources (I have I7 CPU & 8GB RAM) and it drains my PC

    Many thanks

  153. Daniyal Jatoi says:

Microsoft has its legs spread on so many boats. A company can’t give results if it is stuck with so many other issues to handle. Take example of Piriform “A company focusing on CCleaner and some other system related limited products” . Take example of DropBox, Simply focused on the improvement of its product/brand. There may be departments handling stuff at Microsoft, Each department dealing with a specific product/brand but the development process is way too slow. What level of advancement do you expect from other applications/softwares when your own Windows or other Microsoft products/brands you are using aren’t as advance as they should be. We simply type the word in sarcasm of bringing innovation. Its about being innovative which brings innovation. Which Microsoft yet lacks. Having too many things to watch for makes Microsoft not to be able to focus fully on one specific product/brand and being the best of it to the people. I hope my message does get there to Microsoft Seniors or at least the readers reading it try to understand what i want to let them know about.

Skydrive (onedrive) is a great tool. But, in the past, with mesh, we hade the capability to synchronyse some folders of another user (LiveId) in a local folder on my PC to have the files offline. Here, with Skydrive I cannot do that. Please give use back this functionnality ! ;-)

  155. Microsoft, if this is your future (and I do believe it should be), pump everything you got into OneDrive.

Let me make apps for it using HTML5 that I can use on my Xbox One, Windows Phone, and Windows 8.1. Let me share powerpoints using my Xbox. Let me sync music. I don’t need Xbox Music caching, give me OneDrive!

  156. I think most of you commenters are exaggerating over a change of name of a product by Microsoft! It’s just a change of name! It would have been worse if someone bought out Microsoft! :(

I’ve been using Office 365 with SkyDrive for more than a year. However, the interface with Sky Drive is lacking in my opinion. Even with my NEC graphics display, the files all look out of focus in the hierarchy is very boring. Now, when I open the same files in ‘box’, they look sharp and the interface is very clean. I really hope they address both issues so that I would actually use the service more often.

#2) if you’re WiFi-less, you’re dead in the water. I went as far as copying my entire ..SkyDrive\Documents folder to c:\temp to perform a FORCE sync.

We all know why Microsoft has been forced to make this change. I liked the name “Skydrive”. I’m British but absolutely do NOT support that Australian git who owns B-Sky-B, Sky news and TV etc, Murdoch.
He can go take a long walk off a short pier as far as I’m concerned. Their argument that people got confused and thought Skydrive was owned by B-Sky-B was a lie and pathetic!

  180. mransr says:

But the big question for me (and MANY people using SkyDrive on their business computers) is will Microsoft correct the integration problems on Windows 8.1 so people using local accounts can still sync to OneDrive like they could to SkyDrive before the 8.1 update?

  181. Jennifer Mendez says:

Any idea how soon this name change will happen? Couple of weeks? Couple of months?Getting ready to market SkyDrive to our students and employees next week. I don’t want to market it, get the SkyDrive name out there, to have it change in a couple of weeks. And I can’t market it as OneDrive yet because it’ll only cause confusion. Any indication of when this will happen ASAP will be MUCH appreciated.

  182. Chris Wright says:

It would be great if Onedrive would allow for syncing of separate folders from one’s desktop like the old Skydrive and Mesh used to do. I have kept separate folders since the first PCs came about, and I am not about to change. Sugar Sync provides this function, but for a hefty price now. Bitcasa allows for folder syncing as well, but you cannot work online with a mirrored copy. Hopefully, Onedrive will provide for the ability to folder sync as prior versions had.

  187. MYousef says:

Did you move or shut down the live.com sign-in and related files? It would be great to know that you are moving everything over to OneDrive, but I cannot find that statement anywhere. More importantly, I cannot find my files.

  190. Mario says:

I do expect OneDrive to combine the actual SkyDrive and SkyDrive Pro services (I use both).

This is what could make things ‘One’…

  191. Johnny says:

So I have a quick question about this change. Being an avid skydrive user, I have a lot of documents with links to my skydrive folder in windows. When this change comes around, will the folders also be renamed? This will be very painful as I will have to reset all my links in the documents.

  192. John Engelhardt says:

I have had Sky Drive since I got my new laptop with Sky Drive. I have used it primarily for sending photos to members of my family. I have also used it occasionally to send documents to family members. I never had thought of it as a storage media but have found it is great for that, or anything else I want to store without using up my regular hard drive. I am still a bit leery about sensitive material and hackers, so am careful with what I store!

    Thanks Microsoft.

A rose by any other name is still a rose. Microsoft has always had problems with names. Why not rename the cloud storage space “MS-Drive” or “MS Cloud” once and for all and be done with those stupid fights over a name? I don’t think any deity will come down and sue over the name “cloud” – they’d have done so already ;)

OTOH, it would be very nice if the cloud storage were reachable from Windows just as though it were a regular network drive. There was once a kludge that allowed this.

  200. fla_hotrod says:

50GB of free space would be nice for starters (and would certainly make up for that 25GB initially given to (and later taken away) from users. I currently use a couple of other cloud services (Adrive and Mediafire) that have similar plans!

  201. Munna Kumar Sharma says:

  206. DJ Slava says:

SkyDrive or OneDrive, i think, not so important. I think, it is a great idea – to create a cloud server, which can be easily accessed directly from Explorer Windows, and work with the repository, as with a simple folder. The files uploading very quickly, while I’m working. And they are synchronized with other devices is not less quickly. I caught myself thinking that I was the frequent use of flash drives and external hard drive to transfer files from one computer to another.
Especially, it is convenient to transfer small files, such as notes and source development projects to continue to work on another computer.
And most importantly – do not need to open a browser and select the files to send. :)

  256. John Day (author) says:

I have no good experiences with OneDrive. When it was first available as SkyDrive, the simple process of putting a file in the folder on the PC (in my case) and it appearing/available on the linked devices was sort of convenient. However, I soon found that a change to the file did not always get updated throughout.
For that reason, I went back to carrying the files on a small hard drive. If the drive was with me, and it always was, it made no difference which device I used. The file was always available (no wifi or connectivity issues) and always up to date.
I have just started to look at the OneDrive process/facility again, and find that nothing will synchronise across devices and I fear that files I need on a device might be removed, because it is not on OneDrive, itself. I understand, rightly or wrongly that the files are linked, throughout the system. It has now become a nightmare and time consuming to go through all devices and isolate all the files that it has showing in OneDrive, so whatever happens, they cannot be destroyed. Later, I will have to examine the contents of every file on every device to see which ones are valid.
A great time saver cloud storage is NOT!
If I wish to share files with others, then perhaps it might be useful. However, the setting of permissions tends to dissuade me from that option.
If a person uses the OneDrive system infrequently, the re-learning curve is most off-putting.
There will be users who are very familiar with the system and will find it hard to understand why I find the system difficult to follow or make it work. It is simply unfamiliarity, not stupidity on my part. This is not helped by poor “help” documentation, if not poor interface design.
Oh! as an experienced programmer, I know poor design when I see it!

When I send a test link – the end user can open the word doc but it does not allow the user to point to the excel file as the source for the fields. Any suggestions on a resource I can read or reach out to make this happen?
